SUPPLIES NEEDED:
- A bare “tree” somewhere visible in the home. For example:
- A large branch without leaves
- A mural drawn on a wall
- A trunk and branches cut out of paper or poster board
- A collection of “leaves” cut out of thick paper or cardstock. They should be durable and able to be written on easily
- A container for the leaves
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Invite family members to write prayer requests on the leaves. Requests should be as specific and time-bound as possible (e.g., “That John is healed of cancer” vs. “World peace”).
- Spend time daily or weekly interceding for the requests. Pass out the leaves to each family member and spend time praying for them.
- As prayers are answered, attach them to the tree. Do not be afraid that none will be answered—you will be amazed at this visual.
- There are times when God does not answer our prayers the way we have asked. When this happens, lay the leaves at the base of the tree and use the opportunity to teach your children about lament.
- At Thanksgiving, remove all the leaves from the tree and read them aloud, giving thanks for each answered prayer throughout the year.
